“The Practice” — six movements on twenty years of shipped work

Composed & conducted M. van Hylckama Vlieg Duration twenty years, ongoing First chair open to new engagements

Programme note

adagio, sostenuto

I design products at the seam where intent becomes interface — where a half-formed idea has to choose what kind of system it wants to become.

AI didn't shrink the design problem. It made it about judgment — which is to say, about phrasing: what to play, what to leave out, and when to bring the brass in.

The movements

attacca — no pause between
First movement

Endemol

Allegro con fuoco
1998 — 2005
UX & Engineering Lead

The opening theme, stated fast and loud. Multilingual content systems and large-scale platforms across an international entertainment portfolio — the technical depth the whole work develops.

Second movement

Yahoo!

Maestoso — for full orchestra
2005 — 2013
Director of UX Prototyping · Senior UX Manager

The big ensemble writing. Global prototyping teams led across offices and product lines; rebrand and personalization work; a generation of prototypers brought up through the section.

Third movement

Google

Scherzo — presto, leggiero
2013 — 2017
Senior UX Engineer / Prototyper

Quick, precise, virtuosic. High-fidelity prototypes for Google Cloud AI, Assistant, and Android — built nightly to settle the morning's arguments between design and engineering.

Fourth movement

Walmart Labs

Andante — with great patience
2017 — 2021
Principal Product Designer / Design Technologist

The slow movement, where the hard things happen quietly. Mobile, voice, and personalization through a digital transformation; recommendation systems made legible to a very full house.

Fifth movement

Kohl's

Con moto — al presente
2021 — now
Senior Product Designer · Generative AI Specialist

The current movement, still being played. UX across cart, checkout, wallet, account, and self-checkout; AI tooling and education carried through the whole orchestra of the design org.

Ostinato — continuous

AI-Created

Perpetuum mobile
always
Independent product lab · solo

The figure that runs under everything. AI tools, design utilities, music, video, arcade games — real software shipped most weeks, proof the hands are still in practice.

Dynamic markings

how the parts are to be played
ff AI-native product design Played at full strength. Systems where the model is the interaction — voice, agents, ambient assistance — not a chat panel bolted on.
f Design engineering Loud and articulate. Prototypes that behave like real software because they are real software, built end-to-end by one player.
sfz 0 → 1 incubation A sudden accent. Ambiguous briefs carried through research, framing, prototype, and shipped product — before the bar ends.
mf Enterprise UX modernization Sustained and steady. Legacy cart, checkout, account, and internal tooling replaced with systems people actually want to use.
mp Internal AI tooling Quieter, but always sounding. Copilots, prompt libraries, synthetic research environments — in use by real teams.
tutti Leadership & enablement Everyone plays. Teams built and led at Yahoo; AI adoption driven through teaching, tooling, and example. IC, lead, or director.
